Preparing for Cold Weather

Preparing for Cold Weather
Fall is my favorite time of year. It’s a welcome break from scorching summer days. The crisp air invites us outdoors, and milder temperatures can offer some relief on utility bills. Ragweed may still linger, but there is much to enjoy as the seasons change.
It is also a season of preparation. We take advantage of summer clearance sales, bring out warmer clothes, and stock our shelves with canned vegetables, fruit jelly, and preserves. Ants gather food, and many birds head south. Creation reminds us to prepare for what lies ahead.
“Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.” —Proverbs 6:6-8, NLT
Verses 7–8 describe how the ant gathers provisions without anyone directing her. What a lesson in diligence and foresight!
Our preparation should reach beyond our closets and cupboards. With shorter daylight hours and the possibility of snowy or icy roads keeping us indoors, we can plan enjoyable activities: reading, crafts, family games, or quiet moments with a warm cup of tea. Give your mind room to rest, prioritize sleep, and make time for prayer and God’s Word.
As we prepare our homes for winter, let us prepare our hearts as well. Gather what you need, embrace rest, and enter the next season with wisdom, peace, and faith.
